Harness hat-trick gives Town Horace Franklin Cup win

HTFC Webmaster4 May 2014 - 21:38

Town reserves ended their season on a high with a 3-1 victory over Saxilby Athletic in the final of the Horace Franklin Cup.

Town made just one change from last weeks win in the semi final of the competition with Michael Harness coming in for Scott Maplethorpe. It proved to be a worthy addition to the side as the Town forward fired in a hat-trick to put Horncastle Town's name on the Horace Franklin Trophy for the first time since the cup began in 1991.

Town controlled the game from the off and found themselves a goal to the good 20 minutes in when Harness opened the scoring drilling the ball past the Saxilby keeper from 10 yards out. It was the Town number 11 once again just ten minutes later who doubled the advantage when he found himself a yard of space as he came in from the left and finished with a powerful toe poked effort catching the 'keeper of guard at his near post. Saxilby looked to regain a foothold in the game towards the end of the half, looking most threatening from set pieces with the height advantage but the Town defence stood strong to hold out for a 2-0 half time lead.

The second half saw much of a similar pattern to the game with Town seeing the majority of the ball and posing more of a threat from open play. Substitutes Ryan Nunn, Josh Cheetham and Callum Low entered the fray to give Town some fresh legs in midfield and defence. Although it was the Town forward Lewis Burchnall who caused the problems in the area once again as he was fouled to earn Town a penalty which if converted who surely kill the game off. However, Luke Blondel failed to do so as he blazed the ball over the bar and out of the ground to keep Saxilby hopes of turning the game around in tact. Soon after, Town did make it 3 as Josh Cheetham crossed from the right. Lewis Burchnall was unable to head the cross home but Harness picked up the ball at the back post and unleashed a fierce shot into the top corner of the net giving the Saxilby number 1 no hope. This goal all but putting Town's name on the trophy as well as getting his first hat-trick of the season. Saxilby did eventually get a goal of their own as Town failed to clear a scrapy attack which fell to the Saxilby player who placed the ball past Smith in goal to give them a late consolation. Just a minute later the referee blew for the ended of the game which saw Town confirmed as winners of the Horace Franklin Cup.

Team: Smith, Bodily, J.Blondel, Enderby, Lewis (Low), Lamming (Nunn), Wilson, L.Blondel (Cheetham), Harness, Johnson, Burchnall.
