Things didn't start well for Town as they suffered a major setback just ten minutes in. Top scorer Jack Baxter had to be replaced after injurying his knee in a challenge for the ball. Gareth Melia was his replacement joining Lewis Burchnall up front.
The visitors took the lead five minutes later after a pin point cross from the leagues top scorer Jason Tinkler found Joe Ayres in the box who made no mistake with his head.
Imp extended their lead on the half hour mark with a goal almost identical to their first. This time the cross came from slightly deeper but the header was again directed goalwards past the Town 'keeper Liam Smith.
Town came close to getting a goal back just before half time but Gareth Melia's looping header rebounded off the cross bar and away to safety.
The early stages of the second half saw a much improved and more attacking period of play by Town and the hosts finally found a breakthrough twenty minutes into the half. Ollie Johnsons fizzed a freekick into the box which was sliced by one of the Imp defenders into his own net.
Imp ended any hopes of Town turning getting an equaliser ten minutes later when Ayres completed his hat-trick. Being allowed to turn just inside the box his curling shot beat Liam Smith in goal who got a hand to the ball but was unable to push it clear.
It was Joe Ayres who rounded off an impressive individual performance with a fourty yard shot which flew past the reach of the Town keeper for his fourth of the game.
The referee blew his whistle for full time with the scoreline 4-1 to the visitors. Town can have no arguments with the result and were second best on the day, but will now be looking ahead to their next league game on the 22nd of March against Monos FC.
