Slow start costs Town reserves

HTFC Webmaster21 Aug 2019 - 21:57

Town reserves slow start was costly in the end but were unlucky not to get anything from the game after a spirited second half display.

Town went to Cherry with the bare bones of their usual squad with just twelve players. Ryan Gryniewicz, James Bennett and Daniel Bodily were all on first team duty away at Pinchbeck in the county cup.

After just 10 minutes gone the town defence were having a lot of questions asked by the pacey Cherry forwards, and found themselves 2-0 down in that space of time. However the team settled down and started to cause some problems going forward themselves, but the Cherry defence restricted Town to longer range shots.

Town got a goal back just before half time when Jamie Lamming slid a ball through to Jack Baxter who rounded the keeper and slotted into an open net.

The second half saw Town step their game up, with Lamming and Wilson controlling the game in the middle of the park. Nunn and Cheetham on the wings started to get on the ball more and Burchnall and Baxter were linking up as a pair well.

But the third goal went against the run of play when the pacey striker picked up the ball in his own half, ran at the Town defence played the ball out wide and got it back to fire home and make it 3-1.

Town responded well and continued to look for another goal and it soon came when Baxter pulled one back with twenty to go for his second of the match.

Cherry may have thought that Town were dead and buried when they scored a freekick with 10 to go to make it 4-2 but again Town responded positively when makeshift striker Lewis Burchnall fired home with his weaker foot.

Town pressed for the equaliser which seemed imminent and it should have come when Jack Baxter got past his man down the right and decided to shoot when three men were lining up on the six yard box. A chance that Town should have taken to get something out of the game.

The scoreline finished 4-3 to the home side and Towns poor run of form continues but a spirited secon half performance will give them plenty of hope for when they come up against AFC Ruston Sports next Saturday.
