It wasn't particularly good conditions on The Wong, with strong winds playing a major factor in the game.
But when Town went 1-0 down early on they couldn't blame the weather. The Horncastle defence failed to deal with a cross which fell into the path of the oncoming Retford player who slotted home from six yards out to give them an early advantage.
However Town responded well and should have equalised when Daryl Dunn made a run from full back position and was put through one on one on goal but volleyed high and wide to the relief of the Retford defence.
The second half saw the introduction of Ryan Nunn for Jamie Lamming who was struggling with an ongoing injury. Town looked get the ball down in the early stages, but found it difficult to keep the ball in good areas against a strong head wind.
Having commited too many players forward Town were caught on the counter attack fifteen minutes into the second half and with the wind behind them Retford broke quick and punished the Town defence to give them a 2-0 lead on The Wong.
Seventeen year old Bradley Wilson was immediately introduced to the fray for Ryan Gryniewicz with a third of the game to go and made an instant impact with his direct dribbling causing the away side problems. Callum Low also replaced Daryl Dunn at the back.
With less than ten minutes left on the clock Town pushed Luke Blondel on to join the attack going 4-3-3, and it paid off when the ball was worked out wide by Bradley Wilson to Ryan Nunn who pulled the ball back from the byline for Lee Wilson to finish smartly from six yards out on his Town debut.
With Town now on the front foot it was desperate times for the Retford defence who dropped deeper with every Horncastle attack. The ball was again worked out wide by Wilson to Nunn who drilled the ball across the box. Amongst a goalmouth scramble, with his back to goal, Jack Baxter with the outside of his right pushed the ball just inside of the post to give Town a much deserved equaliser.
Even with just a few minutes remaining Town still pushed for a winner, but ran out of time when the referee blew to bring the game to a close at two goals a piece.
With just ten minutes to go and two goals down Town will be delighted with a point, but may go away from the game slightly frustrated they didn't stamp their authority on the game earlier.
