Horncastle's squad saw several changes from the side that drew 1-1 to Ruston Sports Reserves the weekend before. Daniel Bodily and Josh Cheetham were recalled from first team duty, along with Ryan Nunn, Scott Maplethorpe and youngster, George Swift who also rejoined the squad.
It was the home side who made the better start and it was their left winger was was causing Town all the problems. Rasen took the lead through the same player as he cut in from the wing and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net giving Liam Smith no chance in goal. Rasen doubled their lead after 20 minutes when a teasing cross from the left was side footed into the back of the net.
However Town responded in the best possible fashion. Jack Baxter made a jinking run from right wing, pulling the ball back to Josh Cheetham who slotted the ball home to pull a goal back for Town. This seemed to spark Town into life and they began to place much more pressure on the Rasen defence, but went in at the halfway point 2-1 down.
It was the worst possible restart for Town who conceded just minutes in. Josh Cheetham tried to cut out a diagonal pass but the ball fell into the path of the Rasen winger whos shot was just powerful enough to beat Liam Smith in goal who couldn't get a strong enough hand to stop the ball from crossing the line.
After a long period of attacking pressure for Town they finally got a goal back when Lee Wilson's blocked shot fell to Lewis Burchnall who scooped the ball over the oncoming defence and the 'keeper to bring Town right back into the game.
As Town looked for the equaliser they began to be more vulnerable to counter attacks. Unfortunately this gave Alec Enderby a problem when he was outnumbered by two players to one. In an attempt to win the ball he dragged the forward down and the referee pointed to the spot. The Rasen forward stepped up and sent Liam Smith the wrong way to secure Middle Rasen a place in the semi finals of the competition as the whistle blew just minutes after.
Town will feel deserved more from the game having dominated for over an hour of the game, but their slow start proved costly, giving them too much to pull the game back.
The reserves' next game sees them return to league action next weekend when they make the trip to Retford, a game which could see them move off bottom spot if they win.
