Town Reserves played host to Retford Town on Tuesday night in their penultimate league game of the season. The opposition were expected to be extremely tough opposition, having only lost once all season in the league and being in two cup semi finals as well as the Nottinghamshire county cup final.
Town started extremely brightly, pressing the opposition high up the pitch therefore limiting the Retford midfield any time on the ball.
Although it was the away side who had the first chance of the game, when a ball hooked over the town defence was played across to attacker who slotted it past the oncoming Liam Smith. Fortunately, centre back Dave Marshall managed to put the ball out for a corner before it had past the line.
It was Town however who remained dominant in the middle of the park with great work from the threesome, Ryan Nunn, Steve Brown and Scott Maplethorpe. Luke Blondel also key in holding the ball up well and bringing the likes of Daniel Bodily and Matty Low into the game down both flanks.
Town's best chance in the first 45 minutes came from a sweetly struck free kick from Jamie Lewis which required the Retford Town keeper to turn the ball over the bar to keep the scoreline at 0-0.
Town broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the 2nd half in fortuitous fashion when Matty Low broke down the left hand side crossing the ball, which looped over the Retford keeper into the net. Nevertheless, the goal was throroughly deserved for Towns work rate in the previous hour of play.
Retford equalised 10 minutes later when Town failed to tackle the opposition midfielder who dribbled past two players unleashing a powerful shot over the head over the Town keeper.
It was Retford's turn to dominate possession and having been forced to make two substitutions Town fell deeper into their own half, almost inviting pressure onto them.
It was to be away sides night, and with just minutes to go the ball broke to the Retford player in the box, where he forced a save from Liam Smith in goal, who was only able to parry the ball into the path of the oncoming striker who tapped in from close range to give Retford a late winner and the three points.
Town were very unlucky not to come away from the game with any points however there were plenty of positives to take from the game. The Reserves final league game of the season is on Saturday where they are again on The Wong, this time against Middle Rasen. 3 o'clock kick off.
