U13s come unstuck against Hawks

Horncastle Town U13 v North Lindum Hawks U13 Warm up Match – ‘Smash and Grab at the Wong'

On a blustery Sunday morning Horncastle welcomed North Lindum Hawks to the Wong for a warm up match of the season. An expectant crowd gathered from the visiting and home teams, keen to see the sides development.

Town kicked off and started purposely with good work from Ryan Woollard and Ellis Roberts carving out several openings, from the opening exchanges it was clear Hawks intended to make this a physical contest.

It was Town that stuck first with Captain James Mckeag running onto a Roberts through ball, shrugging off the attentions of the Lindum defence to slot in the opening goal, his trademark ‘dab’ celebration becoming a frequent event at the Wong.

Town continued to press with Woollard cutting in from the left going close twice. The Town feeding frenzy continued with Joshua Baxter rifling a right footed shoot albeit into the arms of the diving keeper.

The Red & Whites were running the show, controlling the midfield with Archie Kirk & Josh Britchford at the centre of affairs, it seemed only a matter of time before they would double their lead.

Lindum were restricted to playing on the break with Town fullbacks William Fawcett and Chloe Pickering stoic in defence, linking with Aaron Smith and Daniel Cobban providing an impenetrable line.

The Wongers continued to press, going close with a corner however Lindum broke, sensing the danger Aaron Smith switched effortlessly from attack to defence sprinting the length of the pitch to prevent Lindum from equalising, HT 1-0.

The Town coaching staff shuffled the pack introducing fresh legs to the cause, the second half started much as the first had finished with Town continuing to press, and Connor Pinkett going close.

The Hawks set about their business with their influential no 10 growing in confidence, with a rapier like attack they equalised, 1-1.

Town continued to battle with Kyle Tempest in the thick of the action, going close with a lobbed shot.

With the game looking ever inch a draw Hawks floated in a speculative shot , the wind catching the ball with a recovering Peter Smith only able to palm the ball into the net, 1-2.

The red and whites continued to search for an equaliser but on this occasion it was to no avail, FT 1-2.

The coaching team praised all the players for their application and effort against this physical team anticipating a more positive result when they play in the league. Man of the Match was awarded to Aaron Smith for his impressive performance in the centre of defence.

Town look forward to their next pre-season match against Welton Arrow this Wednesday evening
