Welton Arrows v Horncastle Town U13 Mid Lincs League – ‘U13’s continue their winning streak'
British summertime was all but a memory, but with an hours extra sleep, Horncastle travelled to Welton Arrows to continue their Mid Lincs league campaign. The Wongers were triumphant in a 2-1 victory, a score line which did not illustrate their dominance.
With drizzle in the air at this wood side setting the visitors kicked off, early exchanges were dominated by the red and whites. Ellis Roberts as always a key player in the middle of the park providing the silk, with Josh Britchford and Kyle Tempest providing the steel.
Much of the possession was through the central areas however it was captain James Mckeag providing the width down the right flank, cutting in striking the ball goalwards, the desperate Welton defender handling the ball, the referee immediately signalling for a penalty.
Centre forward Connor Pinkett stepped up to take the penalty, driving the ball cleanly into the back of the net past the sprawling keeper, 0-1.
Town increased the pressure looking for a second, running on from an Aaron Smith free kick, Ryan Woollard cutting in from the left hand wing just denied by Arrows impressive keeper.
Horncastle continued to keep the home team pinned into their half, a series of corners not yielding a deserved second.
With the Arrows defence creaking Woollard ran onto a Roberts through ball, the forward calmly lifting the ball over the on rushing keeper, 0-2.
The home side sparked into life, their favoured front down their right hand wing, Towns left back Chloe Pickering supported by Lewis Howden busy but commanding in their defence.
The Wongers were cruising but on a rare attack Welton were awarded a foul on the edge of the box, from the direct free kick the home side reduced Towns advantage, 1-2 HT.
The home side started the second half purposely, Daniel Cobban in the thick of the action in midfield, it was Town who looked the most likely to add to their lead. Woollard continued to be a thorn in Arrows side cutting in from the left shooting but the keeper standing strong.
Wave after wave of Horncastle attacks continued, Alfie Baird beating the keeper but striking the post. With the home goal under siege Town went close through Aaron Smith and Britchford with Connah Toulson and Pinkett both hitting the post.
Further chances were fashioned for Pinkett and Woollard however Welton’s man of the match goal keeper prevented any further score, FT 1-2.
Head coach Bruce Baxter praised his team for a good result, commending Cobban, Howden, Woollard, Baird & Aaron Smith. It was however midfield general Ellis Roberts who was awarded man of the match for an outstanding performance.
