It was a lively opening forty-five from both sides, with opportunities being created at both ends. The best chance of the first half fell to Horncastle striker, Tony Edwards , but he was unable to take it, missing the target from six yards out with his weaker foot. The opposition weren’t without chances of their own, however, and were unlucky not to convert.
After a goalless first half, the second continued with much of the same; both sides creating but failing to capitalise. However, on the hour mark Town took the lead thanks to Scott Wilson on his return to the side after two seasons out. He redirected a cross from the left past the visitor’s ‘keeper. Ten minutes later, Tony Edwards pounced on some sloppy defending from the opposition centre back, rounded the ‘keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net to double Town’s lead. Shortly after, Town made it three with the move of the game. After some nice build up play, substitute James Melia played a beautifully weighted pass into the path of Tony Edwards who confidently dinked the oncoming ‘keeper for his second of the game. However, after coming close on more than one occasion, the visitors pulled a goal back immediately, taking the scoreline to 3-1. Although it didn’t stay like that for long, as Luke Blondel hit home with ten minutes to go to restore Town’s three goal advantage. Horncastle made it five with minutes remaining when Scott Lowman’s effort rebounded off the post onto a retreating defender and into the back of the net.
Town are now unbeaten in all three of their pre-season fixtures, but will be put to the test once again on Saturday as they travel to last season’s County Cup semi-finalists, North Somercotes.
