Almost 300 people attended the closely fought game on a rather warm evening on The Wong.
Grimsby took the lead 25 minutes into the first half when a inviting cross from the right was headed home by the Grimsby forward.
Town worked hard in the early stages of the second half in an attempt to create an opportunity for an equaliser, but it was the visitors who scored next with an excellent solo goal, turning the town defence in side out before slotting the ball past Keith Jones in goal.
Town were eventually rewarded for their efforts when 17 year old Bradley Wilson broke through the mariners defence, sliding the ball past the near post on his second attempt.
However the visitors responded well, controlling possession in the middle of the park and seeing out the final 10 minutes of the game to the keep the final score at 2-1.
In all honesty a youthful Grimsby side exposed the fact that many of Town's players were lacking the match fitness they will require for the first game of the season, but with a month to go until the opener the team still have plenty of time to improve that area of their game.
Town's next preseason fixture is on Saturday where they will be taking a mix of 1st team and reserve players to play Holton Le Clay Reserves from the East Lincs Combinations league. 2:00pm kick off.
